Improving Your Lung Capacity with 3 Steps

Your lungs can hold a certain amount of air. This is known as your lung capacity. People with lung diseases can see their lungs’ function and capacity diminish over time. While this is certainly not ideal, there are ways to improve your lung capacity.

Belly Breathing

Also known as diaphragmatic breathing, belly breathing is best used when feeling rested. First, relax your shoulders while sitting or lying down. With one hand on your belly and one hand on your chest, inhale through your nose for a few seconds. Your belly should move a lot more than your chest does. Finally, exhale for a few seconds from pursed lips, pushing down on your abdomen. Repeat and continue this cycle to help enhance both the quality and quantity of your breathing.

Keep Your Home Clean

A clean home can do wonders for your breathing. From dust and indoor pollutants to airborne chemical fumes and pet dander, there’s a lot that can hinder your breathing. If possible, replace carpets with hardwood or other hard-surfaced floorings. Otherwise, make sure you vacuum frequently to keep the irritants down. Likewise, curtains can also harbor dust (among other things), so consider either removing them or taking the time to clean them more frequently.

Push Your Exercise

Lung CapacityWhile exercise doesn’t do much to increase lung function, it is beneficial when it comes to increasing how much air your lungs can hold. When exercising, add some resistance to your routine. Take some hills, increase the intensity of your treadmill, and other things that will help push you. According to Harvard Health, doing so makes you breathe harder, which is a key ingredient in greater lung capacity.
